A Beginner's Guide to Treadmills
By John Cammidge

Treadmills (sometimes referred to as running machines) are one of the most popular forms of fitness equipment. If you have never used a treadmill before then it would be advisable to have someone show you the basics.

Imagine the first time you learned to drive a car and how difficult it was to learn all the tasks at hand. Using a treadmill for the first time is the same. If you have a high spec treadmill it will most likely have a lot of options you are not familiar with.

It may be recommended to stand on the treadmill placing your feet on the sides, and going through all the program features such as incline (if supported) this way you can see how the treadmill will work when you are running on it.

The first steps

The first steps on the treadmill may feel weird at first, it is recommended to also keep the treadmill at a slow speed probably 2 – 3 Mph or whatever walking speed you are comfortable with.

Do not overdo the first time with your treadmill; if you haven’t exercised in a long time and run for 30 minutes the next day could be a painful one.

Conclusion

• Keep the treadmill at a slow pace until you are happy with all the functions

• Make sure you are wearing the correct clothing and footwear (you need to feel comfortable)

• Finally remember to have fun with your treadmill, and set yourself realistic goals

As always consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine
