All About Treadmill Motors and Maintenance
By Kevin Urban

What sets a good treadmill apart from the competition is the quality of its construction. If treadmill motors and other parts such as the belt are substandard, the machine won’t perform to the levels you would expect from the best models on the market. It’s a simple fact, treadmills, just like cars or any other mechanical piece of equipment, are only as good as each of its components.

Treadmill belts and parts must also be of decent quality for a machine to operate to its highest potential. The better manufacturers know this and make sure every part, including the belt and motor, are the best. For example, good machines incorporate DC motors, low maintenance parts and quality two-ply or three-ply belts. When all of these things come together, they make a treadmill sing for its user.

If you own a treadmill, you already know how true this is. For a machine to operate at its peak, parts and belts must be kept in good working order. Care on the part of the consumer can ensure the unit’s long life or sentence it to an early grave.

Treadmill parts, such as belts and motors, must be kept clean. Follow any manufacturer instructions for care and pay heed to lubrication. Just like a car, these machines require some minor maintenance to keep performing at their best. Unlike a car, however, treadmills won’t require as much work on your part on a regular basis.

If you don’t own a treadmill, but plan on doing so soon, look for those models that come with good warranties on motors and other parts. Ten to 30 years on the motor is a good coverage range and speaks to the quality of the motor’s inner workings. Other parts should be covered by a warranty of at least two years for the coverage to match some of the better models manufactured. - Remember when maintaining treadmills to follow instructions for proper care provided by the manufacturer. Keep the machine and its belt free of dust and other debris and the machine should last for years.
