Buying a Fitness Treadmill? What You Should Know
By Joseph Ducat
One of the most important parts of any fitness regime is cardiovascular exercise. You need to work out in such a way as to pump up and oxygenate your heart, to strengthen and guard it against future ailments. One of the best ways to do this is to practice a walking or running exercise on a regular basis. You might even want to get a fitness treadmill for your home as this would give you greater convenience over having to go to your local gym all the time. With a treadmill, you can get up and start exercising every day without the need for any preparation.
If you have decided to purchase a treadmill, take note that there are two different types available. Basically, there are manual treadmills and electronic treadmills. A manual treadmill must be worked with your own leg power to make the belt move, while a motorized or electronic treadmill is powered by a belt motor.
An electronic treadmill is more expensive than the manual type, and if you are on a budget, you may decide to purchase the latter. But an electronic treadmill can give you a better workout and has many more functions and capabilities, such as the ability to move its belt at a constant speed. With an electronic treadmill, you can customize settings such as the belt speed and the timer, and you can also track your progress using such measures as the distance you have walked and the number of calories you have burned.
A manual treadmill may be less expensive, but since it works on manual power, it will speed up or slow down depending on your pace, which means it is harder for you to get a steady workout. Another problem with manual treadmills is that they can put greater strain on your knees and hip joints. I have to recommend an electronic treadmill if you are truly serious about getting fit. Or else you may simply be better off using an electronic treadmill at your local gym, if you cannot afford to buy one.
If storage space is a concern, then you may want to consider getting a collapsible treadmill. This type of treadmill can be folded up and stored between workouts so that it does not take up any of your valuable room space. These treadmills are very convenient and also tend to be more inexpensive.
There are quite a lot of treadmills available in various brands, and they may have different functions and capabilities. In choosing a treadmill, be sure it has at least 1.75 to 2 horsepower for continuous performance. You can find a quality treadmill for just about any budget range, so you need not consider only the most expensive ones there are.
